“Yet Mr. Bingley,” Sir William Lucas said jovially, “I have heard a report that is flying throughout the neighborhood that you are interviewing a new candidate for who shall live here in Aginfield.”

“You are correct, Sir William. Tomorrow I am going to meet an Admiral Croft along with his wife.”

At this confession, I saw Charlotte's head turn most abruptly and look to Mr. Bingley.

“Admiral Croft?” she said. “Pray, is his wife's name Mrs. Susan Croft?”

“Yes, it is.”

“Were those the people you had met before in Brighton?” Sir William asked Charlotte.

“Oh,” Charlotte said, her voice growing weak, “yes, I did make their acquaintance.”

I considered my memory of my time at Court at the Prince's banquet, and my mind resorted back to Captain Wentworth, and the same look of unease that he had on his face then was the look that Charlotte's expression masked. Though I should have chosen to not voice my questions and curiosities at the present time, I still decided that it did not hurt to discover more of the secret—if there was a secret at all.

“Yes,” I added, “and at Court, we have had the good fortune to meet Mrs. Croft's brother, a Captain Frederick Wentworth.”

Charlotte's eyes darted towards me, and within them was a look of shock, alarm, and disturbance—yet what was more curious was Jane Austen's expression. She also looked upon me with disquiet and her attention shifted from me to Charlotte, then back to me.

Charlotte was hiding something from me.

And Jane Austen knew what that hidden thing was.
